What is an intimacy coordinator/ director?

As defined by IDC, “an Intimacy Coordinator / Director is a choreographer, an advocate for actors, and a liaison between actors and production for scenes that involve nudity/hyper exposed work, simulated sex acts, and intimate physical contact in tv/ film (IC) or live performance (ID).”

How does Kyra approach intimacy coordination/ direction?

As an intimacy professional, Kyra advocates for actors’ boundaries and acts as a conduit for creative and courageous storytelling in intimate scenes. She understands the unique challenges of performing and directing intimate scenes and feels passionately about empowering everyone on the team to do their best work. When she’s on set or in rehearsal, she ensures that everyone has a clear framework for how these scenes go so that everything runs smoothly on the day of shooting/ throughout the rehearsal process. With Kyra, you will get a communicative, collaborative, consent-driven atmosphere that sets the stage for storytelling with specificity, authenticity, and vibrancy.

Cumulatively, she has completed 50+ hours of training in intimacy direction & coordination. This includes 40+ hours of training with IDC, under the instruction of Claire Warden (the first intimacy director on Broadway), Jessica Steinrock (IC for Never Have I Ever on Netflix), Alicia Rodis (IC for HBO Studios), and numerous other brilliant intimacy professionals. This is in addition to a previous course, led by intimacy director Judi Lewis Ockler. Kyra is currently working towards a certification with IDC.

She has trained as a trauma-informed coach and has experience with and continues to train in gender & sexuality studies, allyship and advocacy for disabled, non-binary, trans, and queer artists, anti-racism and DEI work, anti-sexual harassment training, bystander intervention, and conflict resolution.

  • Mama Short Film (Intimacy Coordinator)

In this coming-of-age student drama film, directed by Saschael Carter, Mama ignores their problems, distracting themselves with other people’s problems. This time, that isn’t going to work. This is bigger than all of that. The plastic is bible. Two blue lines. Positive. A baby in their belly. How? It’s not so important. The pressing issue is whether Mama plans to keep it or not. And it might be wild, but something in Mama is telling them that they can do it. It can’t be that hard. Can it? But everyone has an opinion. Keep the baby! Abort the baby! Mama is forced to make a decision that will alter the rest of their life, and they’re not even sure where to begin. This story is about how even our kindest traits can hold us back.
